Music Monday-“Meant to Live” by Switchfoot

We have a problem with focusing on those around us and comparing ourselves to our peers when really, we should be comparing ourselves to Jesus. If we strive to be like Him and focus on being better than we were the day before, we will be continually moving forward; moving closer to God. That’s all He wants of us. He wants us to give our all to Him. And honestly, it isn’t that hard. The “hard” part comes from denying our flesh. We don’t want to set our old selves aside because we may lose friends, we may not get invited to the fun parties, we feel like we are missing out. But guess what?! All of those things are desires of the flesh.

If you’re worried that you won’t be able to do what you have been doing when you follow God full-heartedly, that means on some subconscious level, you know what you’re doing is wrong.

2 Timothy 2:15 says “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”

Galatians 5:19-21 says “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

About 10 years ago, there was a hit song called “Meant to Live” by Switchfoot. I posted the lyrics and a link to the performance of the song below, if you’re interested. This song applies to this topic because most of us go through life “with our eyes half open” and “bent and broken” and don’t know where to look when “everything inside screams for second life.” The singer/songwriter, Jon Foreman, said of the song “Maybe the kid in the song is me, hoping that I’m meant for more than arguments and failed attempts to fly. Something deep inside of me yearns for the beautiful, the true. I want more than what I’ve been sold; I want to live life.” And the only way to truly live and experience life is through Jesus Christ.

“Meant To Live”

Fumbling his confidence
And wondering why the world has passed him by
Hoping that he’s bent for more than arguments
And failed attempts to fly, fly

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside
Somewhere we live inside
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

Dreaming about Providence
And whether mice or men have second tries
Maybe we’ve been livin with our eyes half open
Maybe we’re bent and broken, broken

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside
Somewhere we live inside
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

We want more than this world’s got to offer
We want more than this world’s got to offer
We want more than the wars of our fathers
And everything inside screams for second life, yeah

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live
We were meant to live
