Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

We, in America, and probably internationally as well, live in a very visually-driven time. Every television show and movie is advertised for in commercials and on billboards. Musicians have to make music videos to appeal to a larger audience-especially with booming webpages like YouTube.  Clothing is sold in commercials, magazines, and billboards by women and men who are extremely aesthetically pleasing, but with completely unrealistic expectations for anyone looking for the clothes to look as good on them as they look on the models. And people are judged at first sight by their clothing, accessories, haircut, car, house, etc. Have you ever heard the phrase “Appearance is everything?” Well, it’s not true and here’s why…

1. We are ALL made in HIS image. God doesn’t make mistakes. He made us all in His perfect image.

2. We are all unique and special. Our differences are what make us special. If everyone on the earth looked the exact same, how monotonous and boring would that be?!

Everyone, even the people you look up to as perfect specimens have something about their bodies they do not like. Skinny girls want curves, curvy girls want to be thinner, girls with straight hair wants curly hair, girls with curly locks want straight hair, we all want different colored hair, etc. The list never ends. If we all learned to celebrate our differences and love ourselves, we would all be so much happier with ourselves and others!

We aren’t always  comparing appearance, maybe you’re comparing lifestyles…

3. Sometimes people who have the nicest house or the fanciest car or the most expensive clothes are in immense debt, or were left an inheritance and that’s how they chose to spend it, or their family worked very hard for the money they have…you don’t know the circumstances of everyone else and you can’t control everyone else’s actions, but you can control your actions and how you react to things. Don’t be jealous. Be happy for others. You don’t need material things to be happy in life.

God has a reason for everything.

Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Be thankful for what you have.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

Know that life is about so much more than material things.

Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”

1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.”

Luke 12:15 “And he said to them, ‘Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.’”

Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Be yourself!

Galatians 5:26 “Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”

The only person you should be striving to be like is Jesus!

1 John 2:6 “Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”

1 Corinthians 11:1 “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. “
